Evonik contributes its innovations to the automotive industry

Although chemical-based components and products have been used for automotive manufacturing for a very long time, the chemicals industry has considerably expanded its contribution to automotive production in the past few decades. Evonik Industries operates as a tier 2 supplier in the value chain of the automotive industry. Our contributions to the automotive industry are everywhere – for instance, in bodywork, tires, powertrain or energy accumulator. Our products help to reduce weight, cut fuel consumption and emissions, and enhance the value of the vehicles.

In brief, our competences in automotive industry can be categorized into 4 aspects: lightweight design, surface technology, emission reduction and fuel saving and lighting technologies. The automotive Industry is also the third largest end market to Evonik - in 2008, close to 18 percent of our total turnover of 11.5 billion euros comes from it.

Yet innovation requires proximity. In the long run we can only achieve sustainable success when we will fulfill the needs of the industry. Given the importance of the Chinese automotive market and our ambitious growth target, we work closely with the top local automotive players. The first Evonik Auto Day could be traced back to 2006, which was held in CEIBS (China Europe International Business School). Later on, in 2009, we held the “Evonik Auto Day” at Chery, one of the leading local car maker. Through these events, we present our competences and ability to provide customized solutions for the customers in automotive industry.

We’re dedicated to coming up with the solutions to meet today’s and tomorrow’s challenges in automotive designing and manufacturing. The technology trends we set in automotive industry are some of the many innovations that make Evonik, the creative force in specialty chemicals.
